MORE Queer Action Films

6 min read

Three years ago, I first tackled the Action film genre and compiled the best 5 Queer Action Films. Since then, we’ve had a few more queer action films enter the scene – so it was time for a second look. Thus today, I’m bringing you 5 MORE Queer Action Films!

If you recall those first five queer action films (or if you’ve just come back after taking a peak at them!), they may not have been the queer action films you were expecting… The trouble when focusing on any specific genre is that films rarely apply to just ONE genre. When you think of an “Action” film, you want to see ACTION!

In fact, in order to be labeled an “Action” film by IMDb, a film must contain “numerous scenes where action is spectacular and usually destructive. Often includes non-stop motion, high energy physical stunts, chases, battles, and destructive crises (floods, explosions, natural disasters, fires, etc.)” A film can certain have other genre elements, like romance or even comedy, but there can be no doubt that an action film is full of action.

This time around, I didn’t have to dig as deeply to find more queer action films. The first one probably would have been my first pikc three years – if it had been released! This Oscar-winning queer film absolutely is an action film. But the other four films below are just as deserving. The next two queer action films draw us into the espionage world: one is a campy, queer homage to James Bond; the other has a “Bourne Identity” vibe. The next film is one I actually have reviewed… it’s not the best! But it IS a queer action film. And the last film is a foreign film I discovered that reeks of queer action story.

So dive on in and check out these 5 MORE Queer Action Films!

A middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led.

There is no question: this 7 Oscar-winning film most certainly is a queer action film! Now, it took me a lot longer than I’d like to admit before I finally watched “Everything Everywhere All At Once”. And I will also note that it took me a while before the story really drew me in because the concept is a bit out there. But that quirkiness and bold stance of jumping universes to save the world is also exactly why I loved this film! And what a talented cast – not only did everyone portray their main character, but also how their characters would act in extremely different universes. If you haven’t seen “Everything Everywhere All At Once” yet – what are you waiting for?!

Watch Everything Everywhere All At Once on Amazon, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount, Netflix, and YouTube.

Jayson Bend, Royal Intelligence Ministry agent, teams up with his Swiss counterpart, Alec DeCoque, to stop the activation of a newly launched satellite that will turn Raymond Perdood, the billionaire owner of the largest global chain of hair salons, into the most powerful man in the world.

I was unsure what to expect from “Jayson Bend: Queen and Country”. The synopsis was intriguing, but I also got a bit of an Austin Powers vibe which had me reserved. Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about. This queer film is not only definitely an action film, but it’s full of camp and comedy! Between the cheesiness of the script, the puns in everyone’s names, and even the absurdity of a man trying to take over the world with hair salons – I LOVED it! The connection to James Bond is also very evident which drew me in. However, I’m also aware that this film’s style is not for everyone. So give it a watch, and let me know what you think.

Ex-spy Jacob Keane is drawn back into the shadowy world of international espionage when his former partner Marta reappears after seventeen years, her memory erased, on the run from a pair of deadly, psychopathic assassins.

“Kiss Me, Deadly” is a film that’s been in my collection for a while but only finally sat down to watch for this month’s post. Pulling in strong vibes from “The Bourne Identity” film saga with a former spy turning up without their memories, I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this film. Like any good action film, the plot drew me in quickly and kept me captivated as our leads tried to stay ahead of the game and discover why they were being chased. Is it on the same cinematographic level as a blockbuster hit? Perhaps not. But I think the aspect that I enjoyed the most was the fact that Jacob being gay did not have an impact on the story; his sexuality was just accepted. If you’re a fan of spy films, I think you’ll enjoy this queer action film.

Watch Kiss Me, Deadly on Amazon, Prime Video, Here TV, and Tubi.

The sky is literally falling in this thriller as one of the nation’s leading astronomers, Madison Kelsey believes she is tracking a huge rogue asteroid rocketing toward earth. However, she can’t get anyone in authority to take her seriously. With only hours remaining until probable impact, Madison enlists the aid of discredited former Air-Force Colonel, Richard Donovan. Together they hatch a plan to resurrect a mothballed military laser in order to blast the asteroid out of the sky before it destroys the planet. The only problem with their plan, the laser is under guard in the middle of an Air Force base and the guards have orders to shoot to kill.

Despite giving “Deadly Skies” a rather low rating, I enjoy watching this queer action film every now and then. It’s certainly not a big budget blockbuster disaster film, but it still is enjoyable (even if cringeworthy at times). Even better, it features a main storyline with gay characters in a manner that equally shows how their sexuality doesn’t actually matter. In terms of representation, it’s a step forward. And let’s face it – Antonio Sabato Jr has a sexy butt! I probably wouldn’t recommend adding “Deadly Skies” to your Watch List though, unless you enjoy disaster films.

A transgender child from Lakshadweep sets off to Mumbai in pursuit of Akbar, an elder brother who left the island due to his sexual orientation.

I must confess – I didn’t get time to watch “The Elder One” before I had to publish this post – oops! However, since it’s not currently available for YOU to watch right now, I don’t feel as horrible. But it’s on my Watch List and once I have the time, I’ll update this with my thoughts.

Unfortunately The Elder One is not currently available to stream/watch/buy.

So what do you think of these 5 MORE Queer Action Films? Do you agree with my choices and my quick thoughts about each film – or maybe you disagree? Or perhaps I left out a queer action film you think I should’ve included…?
