Fire Island

Synopsis:

Set in the iconic Pines, Andrew Ahn’s “FIRE ISLAND” is an unapologetic, modern day rom-com showcasing a diverse, multicultural examination of queerness and romance. Inspired by the timeless pursuits from Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice, the story centers around two best friends (Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang) who set out to have a legendary summer adventure with the help of cheap rosé and their cadre of eclectic friends.

Quick Thoughts:

“Fire Island” is what you get when B-list gays who pretend to be A-list gays while holidaying on Fire Island mix with actual A-list gays – with hilarious results. And I LOVED it! Now, this queer film is full of cliche stereotypes, awkward situations, and unexpected interactions – but that’s part of what makes it enjoyable to watch. Interestingly enough, the two main romances blossom under the guise of opposites attract. And there’s the obvious literary references to Jane Austin’s novel. But it’s simply enjoyable to watch and it’s hard to not get caught up with the romantic gestures that lead to a cute ending. If you haven’t seen it yet, then definitely add “Fire Island” to your watch list!
