Christmas on Earth

(Cocks and Cunts)

Synopsis:

For all intents and purposes, “Christmas on Earth” is a performance art film about genital worship. At twenty-nine minutes, Barbara Rubin has created the ultimate study on the celebratory and erotic nature of free love. The film is tinted in various colors (hence the title), and finds various people engaging in sexual activity. Men with women, men with men, women with women, and several orgies throughout.

Quick Thoughts:

First of all, this is a NSFW short film! Nor is it a Christmas film, despite being released on Christmas Day in 1963 and having “Christmas” in the title. To be honest, I don’t know what to think of this experimental art film. While other reviewers can read into the creator Barbara Rubin’s personal life into understanding this queer short, I got almost none of that from wasting a half hour trying to understand what I was watching. It’s apparent that her connection to Andy Warhol and the seemingly influence of his usage of overlaying colors onto images is brought into her own artistic vision, but it’s rather jarring when you realise what is actually been shown through the lens of color. And why is the soundtrack like someone put on the radio? Frankly, skip this queer short film – if you’re even lucky to find a copy to watch!
