Quick Thoughts:
While some reviewers note that this film adaptation of the novel is a horrendous adaptation, I actually enjoyed “50 Ways of Saying Fabulous”. (And it’s not just because it’s set and filmed in New Zealand, my current home!) Set in 1975, the slow pace is actually quite reflective of the Otago region and New Zealand lifestyle itself – things are not rushed. However, this might make the movie feel like the story is dragging itself out to modern viewers who expect action or quick paced films. Yet the acting was done very well, the characters are believable (and hatable where appropriate), and the scenic views are breathtaking. Overall, it’s a slow, coming of age and self-acceptance story of a young, heavy set boy in rural country.
