The Color Purple (2023)

Synopsis:

In 1909 Celie a black American girl is given away in marriage by her abusive father to a local farmer Albert who treats her cruelly. Celie is God fearing and deliverance comes in the form of jazz singer who takes her away to another city far away from her misery. She now gets her long due happiness.

Quick Thoughts:

I’ll confess that I haven’t seen this recent film adaptation of “The Color Purple”, which itself is a film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name and story. However, I HAVE seen the musical – twice actually! While some question whether the format change to a musical rather than the original 1985 film adaptation from Steven Spielberg, I actually love many of the musical moments. This is a musical that truly embodies the philosophy that the songs of a musical take us to a new depth of understanding about the story. And there are some powerful songs and performances in this show! Until I have the chance to watch this film adaptation, I can only assume that it is a good adaptation of the stage musical. Even if it has issues, it’s still a queer film worth watching!
