Synopsis:

This panoramic tale of Savannah, Georgia’s eccentricities focuses on a murder and the subsequent trial of James Arthur Williams: self made man, art collector, antiques dealer, bon vivant, and semi-closeted homosexual. Magazine reporter John Kelso finds himself in Savannah amid the beautiful architecture and odd doings to write a feature on one of William’s famous Christmas parties. He is intrigued by Williams from the start, but his curiosity is piqued when he meets Jim’s violent, sexy lover, Billy Hanson. Later that night, Billy is found dead, and Kelso stays on to cover the murder trial.

Quick Thoughts:

This epic movie, based upon the novelization of an actual Savanah murder and subsequent trials, is rather captivating. There are a few queer elements involved. For one, this film stars the phenomenal Lady Chablis, an iconic transgendered woman from Savanah. Second, there is the revelation that Jim was having an intimate relationship with the hustler he shot. Now, he never full out admits that he is gay, but eloquently explains that while both Billy and he had their girlfriends, they also slept together. So perhaps Jim is rather bisexual? If you’re looking for something that’s sexual and adventurous, then perhaps you’ll enjoy another queer film. However, if you enjoy drawn out crime stories with a gay twist, then “Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil” is worth watching!
