Downing

Synopsis:

Within the backdrop of a vibrant house party, ‘Downing’ explores the complicated minefield of teenage sexuality as John, the isolated local gay lad, finds an opportunity to exact revenge on his straight oppressor, the popular and handsome Daniel.

Quick Thoughts:

“Downing” is an interesting queer short film. It draws in many common high school issues: underage drinking, parties, the sexy popular guy you lust after but don’t have a chance with, the name calling (including from your crush), and more. However things take a dark turn when Daniel makes a move on John’s intoxicated and underaged friend, Chloe. But what John does after that is what surprised me the most! The blackmail sex changes the power play between the two boys and oddly comes across as appropriate – until the final twist comes. Chloe isn’t underage, and John’s mate’s have now seen the video. It’s a queer short film that is worth a watch, but it’s nothing special.
