Other People

Synopsis:

Follows David as he moves back home to be with his mother for the year between her giving up her fight against cancer and slowly dying. Davids relationship with his family is, at best, strained (especially in regard to his father) because of an apparent difficulty in accepting his homosexuality. Although the subject matter is genuinely distressing, his mothers death ultimately helps restore his familial bonds and become an integrated part of the family unit again.

Quick Thoughts:

I have to confess: “Other People” is an awkward movie to watch. But that’s likely intentional. After all, the heart of the story is a challenging one. Having to cope and go through someone dying of cancer is not easy for anyone. Throw in a father who still doesn’t fully accept his gay son with said son a bit awkward himself, and there are many scenes that are not entertaining. And that’s ok, as not all films need to be entertaining. There is an important story to tell with this queer film, it’s just not one that I’m a fan to watch. But give it a shot, perhaps you’ll enjoy “Other People”!
