Beginners

Synopsis:

A young man is rocked by two announcements from his elderly father: that he has terminal cancer and that he has a young male lover.

Quick Thoughts:

I have to confess that I started to lose interest while watching “Beginners”. It comes across as yet another film where the main gay character is sick and dying. (Not from AIDS, but that trope has been beaten to death!) However the constant back and forth in timelines, the contrasting and jarring jumps between the happiness of an older gay man finally coming out and the deep dive into sadness of the son kept thwarting any effort to really get into the film. I even made a note that despite a slight uptick at the end, the entire film felt like a drawn out prologue to that final scene. I likely need to rewatch “Beginners” to make a full recommendation, but first impression wasn’t that great.
