Treading Water

Synopsis:

Casey has rejected her privileged upbringing and restores old boats for a living. She lives with her beautiful social worker girlfriend Alex in what seems like a cozy new life until her stuffy family demands that she come home for Christmas – without Alex.

Quick Thoughts:

Treading Water is an interesting film that seems to lack a solid identity. It’s certainly queer, given the lesbian couple at the front and center. Yet the stories between the characters are so intertwined that it almost feels like an ensemble film. It takes place over Christmas, yet other than some decorations and the talk of Christmas Eve mass, it could take place at any time of the year. Lastly, the ending is rather anti-climatic. It is a lesbian film, and some may find it more entertaining. But I leave that for you to decide.
