Detroit Evolution

Synopsis:

It’s been one year since Markus freed the androids of Detroit. The most advanced android ever created, Nines, has evolved past his initial programming as a ruthless hunter, and now protects the city as a DPD detective. But as new crimes and dangers start to threaten RK900 himself, he must also juggle his growing fondness for his partner, Detective Gavin Reed, and navigate everything that they mean to one another.

Quick Thoughts:

“Detroit Evolution” is a rather interesting film, but it certainly is a queer sci-fi film! Based upon the video game “Detroit: Becoming Human”, the film is actually an amateur fan film! From a film perspective, it’s quite good. I began watching with trepidation, but was pleasantly surprised at how well “Detroit Evolution” is cinematically. However, it’s not without a few flaws. The actual case Gavin and Nines are working on is rather easy to decipher early on, and for anyone who doesn’t know the game misses out on a lot of backstory between the characters. (Like me!) Interestingly, the two main characters of “Detroit Evolution”, Gavin and Nines, are barely in the actual video game! Gavin shows up only in a few scenes of the video game, and Nines/RK900 is only revealed in a mid-credit scene after finishing the game. Perhaps more puzzling is that Gavin seems to hate androids, especially Connor/RK800 (Nines predecessor)! It seems like the fans took two rather attractive CGI video game characters, latched onto a snarky “bromance” remark, and have created their own deviation. In fact, there’s a queer short sci-fi film that they made prior to “Detroit Evolution”, called “Detroit Awakening” that goes into the backstory of Gavin and Nines. Despite not fully knowing the backstory though, I really enjoyed watching a queer romance between Gavin and Nines. (Some are even calling it an asexual romance because Nines is an android without sexually defining genitalia.) If you’re after a queer sci-fi film, then “Detroit Evolution” certainly fits the criteria and is a captivating film. Plus, they have just recently announced they are working on a sequel/prequel, “Detroit Reawakening”! (which is actually a remake of their initial queer short film, “Detroit Awakening”)
