The Sibling Rule

Synopsis:

Two women fake a gay marriage to take advantage of the sibling rule, which will keep their kids in the same school together, but complications arise when the marriage becomes real.

Quick Thoughts:

I’m not quite sure about “The Sibling Rule”… the story starts off rather abruptly. Two best friends who had parted ways for unknown reasons are drawn back together by their young girls being best friends, and facing a likely separation of the girls. Then randomly there’s a sibling rule, that if the two girls were siblings, they’d both be allowed to continue attending their school. Except both women are straight! And by the end, we’re supposed to believe that they’ve both falling in love for real, despite being “married” the entire time for their girls?
This sapphic film evokes the “stay together for the kids” of hetero marriages, along with the trope of best friends become lovers. Except there are also massive time jumps between scenes where suddenly it’s Christmas, and surprise – they’re both in love? I think with a bit more work on the script and perhaps more believable actresses, there’s something here. But watch this lesbian film for yourself and decide. But I won’t call it a queer holiday film, and not sure I’d rewatch it myself.
