A Smoky Mountain Christmas

Synopsis:

A country-western singer on a trip through the Tennessee mountains runs into a reclusive backwoodsman and a witch.

Quick Thoughts:

If you enjoy Dolly Parton, then you’ll enjoy this classic country holiday film. But the underlying question is whether or not it’s a queer holiday film? To be honest, there’s nothing explicitly noted. However many folks have long assumed that Parton’s character Lorna is a lesbian due to the very brief homage to her “special relationship with longtime gal pal Judy”. This is noted in the initial voiceover and a brief glimpse at photos of Lorna and Judy. But other than that, most folks look to some queer subtext. Such as the confrontation between the witch Jezebel and Lorna, where there’s a line about having a “taste of Jezebel’s delicious pie”… and more. I’m still on the fence, but others view it as a lesbian holiday film, so we’ll keep it in the Database.
