A Holy Mess (En underbar jävla jul)

(En underbar jävla jul)

Synopsis:

A gay couple invites their somewhat-homophobic families to meet for the first time during Christmastime, and they have a special gift for them.

Quick Thoughts:

“A Holy Mess” by Helena Bergström is exactly why you should check out foreign queer holiday films! I had no idea what to expect, as family dramas around the holidays can easily go either way. And boy, the drama certainly unfolded as Oscar’s father Simon kept digging and questioning. However, even as things unravelled, the beauty of the storytelling is that it went far enough that they all realized it. It took all of them hurting Cissi, even though she is quite integral to the entire family, before each started to care in their own way before a Christmas miracle occurs. This type of ensemble film shows us that even when we have our fault’s and don’t understand the situation, like a two gay men living and having their child with a female friend, things can work out in the end. I highly encourage you to give this queer holiday film a watch!
